Opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi to appear at banned rally in Tehran

Iran was today braced for more street protests against the disputed re-election of President Ahmadinejad as the country's Supreme Leader ordered an investigation into the vote, reversing his earlier decree that the result was fair.

The authorities have so far arrested 170 reformists and banned a nationwide march by Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mr Ahmadinejad's defeated rival, in an attempt to quell the growing anger among his supporters. But the moderate candidate who lost to the hardliner in Friday’s vote said he will appear at the rally today.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who has the final say on all strategic matters, had issued a decree describing the result as fair and urging the country to unite behind Mr Ahmadinejad. But today he ordered the powerful Guardians Council to examine the allegations of vote-rigging by Mr Mousavi
